Soonie Shin, 83, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Soonie and her large family survived displacement during the Korean War. She went on to attend university as an English major at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. She met her future husband Dusik in 1967, married in 1968, and emigrated to the United States in 1969. She eventually made her home in Lexington, Kentucky, where she worked as a homemaker for many years and then as an administrator supervising the accounts payable for her husband’s medical practice. Over the years, she also served the community through her work at the local health department and as a court interpreter assisting Korean immigrants navigating the court system. When Dusik transitioned to semi-retirement, they moved to Somerset, New Jersey, where they found communities through their love of golf, alumni networks, and church. A woman of faith, Soonie sang in the choir at Praise Presbyterian Church, a Korean church, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Bound Brook. She loved playing golf and tennis, always wanting to improve her game or win, but most of all, she cherished spending time with her family and grandchildren. She will be remembered as an energetic and devoted wife, a caring mother, and a proud grandmother.
Soonie was predeceased by her oldest of five sisters and one of her younger brothers. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Dusik; her daughter Eileen Shin and son-in-law Roger Chen; her son Roger Shin and his wife, Darleen; her grandchildren Analise, Xavier, and Noah; as well as three sisters and one brother.
Gathering with the family will be 10:00 – 10:45 AM, Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Presbyterian Church, 409 Mountain Avenue, Bound Brook, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial at Bound Brook Cemetery will follow. Arrangements are in the care of Hagan-Chamberlain Funeral Home, Bound Brook.
