Dr. Sheldon Guss, 95, died peacefully at his home in Martinsville with family on April 18, 2026.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in East Flatbush, he was the son of the late Murray and Elizabeth Guss (née Berman). He graduated near the top of his class at Samuel J. Tilden High School and went on to attend Syracuse University before earning his medical degree from Leiden University in the Netherlands in 1957.
He met his beloved wife, Susan Guss (née Ungar), in 1950, and they married in 1955 before returning to the United States to begin their life together.
Dr. Guss began his medical career at Bound Brook Medical Group and later became Chief of Pediatrics and Head of Infectious Disease at Somerset Medical Center. He went on to found Bound Brook Pediatrics, building a thriving practice that served thousands of families over more than four decades which continues to serve the community today. He was known for his dedication to patient care and mentorship.
In addition to his medical career, he served in the Army National Guard.
Outside of work, Dr. Guss enjoyed photography, travel, woodworking, and most of all, spending time with his family, especially taking his grandchildren out to dinner.
Dr. Guss is survived by his wife, Susan; his sister, Phyllis; his sons, Bert (Karen), Richard (Sheryl), and Howard (Lisa); his grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel (Kristina), Emily, Elissa, Adam (Diana), Eric, Sarah, and Jacob; and his great-grandchildren, Nina and Adelaide.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Temple Sholom Cemetery, Chimney Rock Road in Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.
