Robert William Tobey, 95, passed away peacefully at his home in Bound Brook, New Jersey, on February 26, 2026.
He was born on July 27, 1930, in Plainfield, New Jersey, to the late Fred and Marie (Hellebrand) Tobey. He grew up in Plainfield with his eleven siblings and their horse Pumpkin, leading others to humorously refer to their home as a "one-horse town."
After graduating from Plainfield High School, Robert enlisted and served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, serving four years, including deployment to Korea during the Korean War from 1951 to 1952 with the First Marine Division as an artilleryman. His service left a lasting mark on his character, shaping the strength, work ethic, and sense of responsibility he carried with him for the rest of his life.
Early in his career, Robert worked in the tree service industry as a skilled tree trimmer, climbing, pruning, and felling trees. He later retired from New Jersey Bell Telephone after 30 years of service as a lineman and went on to work in the gun department at Efinger's Sporting Goods, where he was known for his kindness, knowledge, and support to everyone he encountered.
Robert was not only dedicated to his work but was also passionate about his interests. He loved spending time outdoors, particularly relishing the moments he spent hunting with his Irish Pointer, Ripper, and fishing in local waters. He also greatly valued physical fitness and enjoyed exercising and remaining active throughout his life.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lillian Tobey, along with his son, Robert F. Tobey, and his wife, Sandy, and their stepson, Tyler.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. Alfred J. Tobey, Frederick, Joseph, Harold, Paul, Richard, and Francis and three sisters Margaret Tobey, Marie Humphrey, and Dorothy Certalic.
