Joseph Michael De Iulio passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, while doing what he loved—cycling.
Joe, aka “Joey Dee,” was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend throughout his 79 years. He was born and raised in Syracuse, New York, the son of Marco and Natalie De Iulio. He spent his youth surrounded by his large Italian family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A studious graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School in Syracuse, Joe went on to attend LeMoyne College and then Syracuse University, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics. He also earned his Master’s Degree in Computer Science.
Joe and his first wife, Louise, were the proud parents of two children, Chris and Elizabeth De Iulio. In 1988, Joe married the love of his life, Jacqueline “Jackie” De Iulio, and lovingly became “Pop” to his two stepsons, Chris and Jeff Mason.
Joe worked as an analyst for AT&T for 30 years. One of his favorite roles was his first assignment on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. Always active, Joe played softball and bowled with AT&T friends. Never one to fully retire, he later worked at UPS, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and for a short time at the Bridgewater JCC. In addition to that, Joe was a Deacon and Elder at Bound Brook Presbyterian Church for nine years.
Throughout his life, Joe found great joy in spending time with family and friends, and could always be counted on to lend a hand. He and Jackie cherished traveling together, including memorable trips with their children to San Francisco in 1997 and to the Outer Banks in 2013 with their grandchildren. They also traveled across the United States and to Italy to visit family. Joe adored his grandchildren, and the feeling was mutual. He could always be found playing with them, making them laugh, asking them about their lives and truly listening as they grew older, encouraging them in their various pursuits, or teaching them how to make his specialty, the best and always delicious Cesar Salad.
Joe had a passion for cycling and shared many unforgettable trips with his sons and friends, riding in Italy, France, Belgium, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colorado, Wyoming, Vermont, and throughout New Jersey. During one momentous trip, Joe was delighted to have cycled Mount Ventoux, the Giant of Provence, plus the Galibier, a mountain pass in the French Alps, where he and fellow cyclists followed the route of the Tour de France. He was a proud member of the Bedminster Flyers Cycling Club for many years, as well as President for several of those years, where he rode regularly and enjoyed gathering with friends afterward, especially for their “Boys Night Out” dinners. Around age 60, Joe began the tradition of completing a “birthday ride” each year. His goal was always to ride the same number of kilometers as his age.
Joe’s love of beer inspired him to start a monthly beer-tasting group, where he thoughtfully selected and shared beers, along with printed notes for his friends to enjoy. After the passing of his beloved wife Jackie in 2018, Joe continued to embrace life fully, building new friendships and staying active in his community. Ever social and adventurous, he formed many new friendships later in life through meet-up groups, dancing to local bands, traveling, and playing weekly Mahjong at the JCC in Bridgewater. Joe will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him due to his kind nature, energetic spirit, and sense of humor.
Joe will be lovingly remembered by his children and their spouses: Chris De Iulio; Liz and Ryan Smith; Chris Mason and Daniela Chiara; and Jeff Mason and Jen Ingram; his five grandchildren, Sophia, Alyssa, Mara, Madelyn, and Sachi; his sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Bob De More; his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Sandy De Iulio; his nephew, Mark De More; and many cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Bound Brook Presbyterian Church in Bound Brook, New Jersey. Interment will follow at the church cemetery, with a repast afterward.
